West Indies secures fourth consecutive victory, defeats Afghanistan by 104 runs

KATHMANDU: In the final group stage match of the ongoing T20 World Cup held on Tuesday morning, West Indies achieved a resounding victory over Afghanistan by a margin of 104 runs.

Chasing a target of 219 runs set by West Indies, Afghanistan was all out for 114 runs in 16.2 overs.

Ibrahim Zadran was the top scorer for Afghanistan with 38 runs, while Azmatullah Omarzai contributed 23 runs. On the bowling front, Obed McCoy was the standout performer for West Indies, taking 3 wickets.

Akeal Hosein and Gudakesh Motie supported him well, claiming 2 wickets each.

Earlier, after losing the toss and being put into bat, West Indies posted a formidable total of 218 runs for the loss of 5 wickets in their 20 overs.

Nicholas Pooran played a blistering innings, scoring 98 runs. Johnson Charles added 43 runs, captain Rovman Powell contributed 26 runs, and Shai Hope scored 25 runs.

With this victory, West Indies topped Group C, winning all four of their matches and accumulating 8 points to advance to the Super Eight stage. Afghanistan, having won 3 out of their 4 matches, also progressed to the Super Eight.

The Super Eight stage will feature India, Australia, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, USA, England, West Indies, and South Africa.

In the Super Eight, Group 1 comprises India, Australia, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh, while Group 2 includes USA, England, West Indies, and South Africa.

Each team will play against the others in their group, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the semifinals. The Super Eight matches are set to begin on June 19.
