KATHMANDU: The government has made it mandatory to renew the National Identity Card for the renewal of social security allowances.

According to the decision made in the Cabinet meeting on June 6, there is an increased crowd at the District Administration Office since the national identity card has been made mandatory.

Yuvaraj Kattel, Director General of the Department of National Identity and Registration, informed that in the first phase, the renewal of social security allowances has been made mandatory with the national identity card in 28 districts starting from the upcoming month of Saun.

He further stated that additional manpower has been mobilized by the department for registration details in those districts, coordinating with local bodies.

The District Administration Office is conducting campaigns in coordination with municipalities and rural municipalities at the district level for registration details.

In the first phase, the following districts have made the national identity number mandatory: Jhapa, Rautahat, Rupandehi, Morang, Sarlahi, Kapilvastu, Sunsari, Kathmandu, Dang, Udayapur, Bhaktapur, Banke, Saptari, Lalitpur, Bardiya, Siraha, Sindhuli, Surkhet, Dhanusha, Makwanpur, Kailali, Mahottari, Chitwan, Kanchanpur, Bara, Kaski, Parsa, and Tanahun.

The department has been conducting registration campaigns for the details of the National Identity Card in local levels of 73 districts for the past four years.

Currently, details collection is also ongoing through all district administration offices, 54 area administration offices, and various local levels of districts.

As it is possible to renew social security allowances until the month of Bhadra 2081 BS, individuals who have not registered details in the identity card are requested by the department to contact their ward offices during the campaign period or at a convenient time to register details at the District Administration Office and Area Administration Office nearby.

The department issued a notice on Wednesday informing that information has been provided that even if details are not registered in the identity card, there will be no obstacle in receiving social security allowances for children, those who cannot take care of themselves, the disabled, helpless, or elderly citizens above 90 years of age.
