West Indies’ third win in a row, reached ‘Super 8’

KATHMANDU: The West Indies have advanced to the Super 8 stage of the ongoing T20 World Cup.

On Thursday morning, they secured their spot by defeating New Zealand by 13 runs in a Group C match.

Chasing a target of 150 runs set by the West Indies, New Zealand managed to score only 136 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in their 20 overs.

For New Zealand, Glenn Phillips was the top scorer with 40 runs, while Finn Allen contributed 26 and Mitchell Santner remained unbeaten with 21 runs.

West Indies bowlers Alzarri Joseph and Gudakesh Motie took 4 and 3 wickets, respectively.

Earlier, batting first, the West Indies scored 149 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in their 20 overs.

Sherfane Rutherford was the highest scorer for the West Indies with 68 runs.

On the bowling side for New Zealand, Trent Boult took 3 wickets, while Tim Southee and Lockie Ferguson each took 2 wickets.

With this victory, the West Indies have won all three of their matches, earning 6 points and securing their place in the Super 8 from Group C.

New Zealand, on the other hand, suffered their second consecutive defeat, putting their Super 8 qualification in jeopardy.

Afghanistan, with two wins from two matches and 4 points, is in second place in the group.

Afghanistan will play against PNG on Friday, and a win will see them through to the Super 8, which would eliminate New Zealand from the race.

New Zealand’s next match is against Uganda on Saturday, while the West Indies will face Afghanistan on June 18.
