Malawi’s vice president & others confirmed dead in plane crash

KATHMANDU: The Vice President of Malawi, Saulos Chilima, and nine others aboard a military aircraft have been confirmed dead.

The aircraft went missing on Monday morning, as announced by President Lazarus Chakwera on Tuesday.

Chilima was en route to the funeral of the country’s former Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Ralph Kasambara. Kasambara was discovered deceased in a lodge room in Lilongwe, Malawi’s capital, on Friday.

His burial took place on Monday at his home village in Nkhata Bay, near Mzuzu Airport.

The plane failed to arrive at its scheduled destination, Mzuzu Airport, at 10:02 a.m. (0802 GMT) on Monday, according to Colleen Zamba, the country’s Secretary to the President and Cabinet.
