Afghanistan floods affect over 30,000 since year-start: UN
The World Health Organization also reported increased waterborne illnesses, notably diarrhea and skin infections in the country's northern regions, where recent floods mostly hit.
KABUL: More than 30,000 people have been affected by floods across Afghanistan since this year, the United Nations (UN) has said.
The UN refugees agency said on social media platform X on Monday that flood-affected people “urgently need emergency shelter, medical supplies, food, cash, safe drinking water and hygiene kits.”
The World Health Organization also reported increased waterborne illnesses, notably diarrhea and skin infections in the country’s northern regions, where recent floods mostly hit.
Mullah Janan Saeq, a spokesman for the country’s national disaster authority, said, “In some provinces, such as Faryab province, several compatriots were missing and were affected by floods, and the search is ongoing.”
“I am 60, and I have never seen such a flood. Fifteen people from our families were killed, and five people are missing,” Muhammad Dadullah, a resident of Bilchiragh district of the northern Faryab province, told Xinhua.
At least 120 had been killed in the latest round of heavy rains and flash floods in Faryab and the western Ghor province on Friday and Saturday, local officials said Sunday.
