UN chief urges end to humanitarian disaster in Gaza

KATHMANDU: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has asked that the Security Council intervene to avert a humanitarian calamity in Gaza.

Guterres has written to the President of the Security Council to demand action.

He sent the letter referring to Article 99 of the UN Charter for the first time since becoming UN Secretary-General in 2017.

Article 99 of the Charter reads, “Anything that threatens international peace and security shall not be tolerated.”

Since Oct 7, at least 130 UN workers helping Palestine refugees have been killed, according to Guterres.
