KATHMANDU: Renowned Nepali film personality and senior actor Sunil Thapa passed away on Saturday morning while undergoing treatment at Norvic International Hospital, Thapathali.

He was admitted after experiencing a sudden health complication.

According to Artists’ Association Chair Mohan Niraula, Thapa died due to a heart attack.

His untimely demise has plunged the entire Nepali art and film fraternity into deep mourning.

Widely known by his iconic screen name ‘Rate Kaila’, Thapa is regarded as a towering legacy of Nepali cinema.

He played a pivotal role in elevating villainous characters to the stature and respect traditionally reserved for heroes, leaving an indelible mark on the industry.

Active for decades in both Nepali and Indian film industries, Thapa delivered numerous memorable performances, earning admiration for his powerful screen presence and versatile acting.

His contributions significantly shaped the portrayal of antagonistic roles in Nepali cinema.

Although his family members have been residing in Mumbai, India, Thapa had been living in an apartment in Shankhamul, Kathmandu. Calling his death an irreparable loss, Artists’ Association Chair Niraula said that Nepali cinema has lost a skilled, seasoned actor whose absence will be deeply felt.

Sunil Thapa’s passing marks the end of an era in Nepali cinema, leaving behind a rich legacy that will continue to inspire generations of artists and filmmakers.
