US suspends DV Lottery program
The decision came after authorities confirmed that the suspect in the shooting was a Green Card holder who had entered the United States through the Diversity Visa (DV) Lottery program.
KATHMANDU: US President Donald Trump on Friday suspended the Green Card Lottery program following a deadly shooting at Brown University that left two people dead.
The decision came after authorities confirmed that the suspect in the shooting was a Green Card holder who had entered the United States through the Diversity Visa (DV) Lottery program.
The suspect, identified as 48-year-old Portuguese national Cláudio Neves Valente, was later found dead. He had immigrated to the US in 2017 under the DV program.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said the suspension was carried out under Trump’s direct instruction, citing concerns over national security and vetting procedures.
The Diversity Visa Lottery, commonly known as the Green Card Lottery, allows citizens from countries with historically low immigration rates to the United States to apply for permanent residency.
The move comes just a month after the administration announced plans to revise the Diversity Visa Lottery entry process for the 2027 program, signaling a broader shift in US immigration policy.
