KATHMANDU: Bagmati Province parliamentary party leader of CPN-UML, Jagannath Thapaliya, has proposed introducing a direct election system for the country’s executive positions — the Chief Minister and the Prime Minister.

He emphasized that such a provision should be enshrined in the constitution, arguing that direct elections would ensure political stability for a full five-year term and strengthen the government’s connection with the people.

According to Thapaliya, a stable government would be able to carry forward development projects consistently without disruption.

He stressed that it is now the right time to amend the constitution to adopt this system.

Criticizing the current political arrangement, Thapaliya noted that frequent changes in government, withdrawal of support, and instability have hindered the pace of development.

He added that when leaders are directly elected by the people, citizens can hold them accountable more effectively, making the system more compatible with democratic practices.

On internal debates within the party, Thapaliya remarked that such discussions are part of a natural political process.
