UML General Secretary asserts party’s commitment to People’s Multiparty Democracy

KATHMANDU: The General Secretary of the CPN (UML), Shankar Pokhrel, emphasized that the party continues to move forward under the guidance of People’s Multiparty Democracy (Jabaj), reiterating that this core principle remains central to its ideology.
Speaking on the final day of the party’s Constitution Convention on Sunday, Pokhrel addressed questions raised by party leaders about the organizational proposals.
He clarified that despite some recent rumors, UML has not abandoned its commitment to Jabaj.
Pokhrel warned against spreading unfounded claims that UML had left Jabaj, urging the media and party members not to engage in baseless publicity. “There has been some confusion in the public discourse suggesting we have abandoned Jabaj. I ask you not to engage in such unsubstantiated campaigns, and not to become spokespersons for individuals pushing these false narratives,” he stated.
The General Secretary further emphasized that all of UML’s official documents and strategies remain rooted in the principles of Jabaj.
He pointed to the 5th National Congress, where the late Madan Bhandari, a key founder of UML, presented a political report that laid the foundation for the party’s direction under Jabaj.
According to UML’s publicity department head, Rajendra Gautam, Pokhrel also reiterated that party Chair KP Sharma Oli has consistently led the effort to refine and promote Jabaj principles. “Chair Oli has been at the forefront of advancing this ideology since its inception. He authored the strategic framework that has been adopted by the party. It is upon the foundation laid by Madan Bhandari’s leadership that we continue to build the party and pursue democratic reforms aligned with Jabaj,” Pokhrel asserted.
The General Secretary’s remarks served to reassure party members and the public that UML remains firmly committed to the democratic and multiparty vision set out by Madan Bhandari, and that the party will continue to uphold and propagate these principles.
