Three-Nation theatre festival opens with Karnali-based play ‘Acheta’ (photos)

KATHMANDU: A three-nation theatre festival organized by the Nepal Academy of Music and Drama has begun on Friday (May 8) in Kathmandu.

The festival is being held in collaboration with the Government of Nepal, Kathmandu Metropolitan City, B.P. Koirala Foundation, and the Embassy of India in Nepal.

The three-day festival, running until May 10 at Kantipur Theatre, features theatre groups from Nepal and India.

Although Sri Lanka was initially scheduled to participate, the Sri Lankan team withdrew at the last moment.

The festival lineup includes Acheta by Nepal’s Kala Ghar, Home in Suitcase by India’s Creative Art Academy, and Shakuni by Ranga Sanskar.

According to the organizers, all performances will begin daily at 5:30 PM.

The opening day featured the staging of Acheta, a play based on the social setting and stories of Karnali region.

Written and directed by Govinda Sunar, the play is performed in the Khas language and stars actors including Jhaken B.C. and Susmita Kunwar.

Organizers also announced that Acheta will begin regular performances at Shilpee Theatre from May 15.
