Tensions escalate in Tinkune area as royalist protest turns violent
The royalist supporters' actions have escalated tensions in the area.
KATHMANDU: Kathmandu’s Tinkune area saw escalating tensions on Friday after a royalist demonstration, with protesters demanding the restoration of the monarchy.
The situation quickly spiraled out of control, as royalist supporters vandalized private properties, causing significant damage.
Three individuals’ homes were reportedly attacked and destroyed during the unrest, heightening the violence.
In response to the chaos, several political leaders were forced to abandon the event and evacuate the area for their safety.
Amidst the growing disturbances, the police were compelled to deploy tear gas to disperse the crowds and bring the situation under control.
The protest, initially intended to culminate in a peaceful rally, has sparked concerns over security in the region, with the royalist actions further intensifying the volatile atmosphere in Kathmandu.
The unrest is part of a broader movement led by the United People’s Movement Committee, under Nawaraj Suvedi, which has gained support from factions, including the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP).
Despite internal divisions within the RPP, the committee’s formation advocates for the restoration of the monarchy, drawing both support and controversy.
