Suwal: Nepali Citizenship shouldn’t be as easy as a bus or movie ticket
Speaking at the House of Representatives on Wednesday, Suwal criticized the second amendment to the Citizenship Bill, saying it cannot be assumed to be entirely beneficial.
KATHMANDU: Prem Suwal, a lawmaker from the Nepal Majdoor Kisan Party, has called for stricter regulations on granting Nepali citizenship, warning that it should not be as easily issued as bus or movie tickets.
Speaking at the House of Representatives on Wednesday, Suwal criticized the second amendment to the Citizenship Bill, saying it cannot be assumed to be entirely beneficial.
He emphasized that in an open-border country like Nepal, citizenship should not be granted solely on the basis of birthplace.
Suwal warned that citizenship-related issues cannot be resolved until the country addresses its open-border challenges.
He also called for a review of provisions regarding non-resident Nepali citizenship.
“Citizenship in Nepal should not be given lightly, as if it were a bus or cinema ticket. Laws should ensure that those benefiting from Nepal’s struggles are not influenced by foreign powers. In a country with open borders, citizenship should be granted with strict criteria,” he said.
The lawmaker further suggested that citizenship should be mandatory by descent for positions in the legislature, judiciary, executive, and even in business and trade sectors.
