KATHMANDU: Sugarcane farmers have been staging a protest in the capital for the past four days, demanding pending payments.
The demonstration, which began on Sunday at Maitighar Mandala, continues today under the coordination of the Sugarcane Farmers Federation Struggle Committee.
The farmers are demanding immediate payment of Rs 70 per quintal for the sugarcane they supplied.
They also raised concerns over the current fiscal year (2082/83) budget, highlighting that no allocation has been made for subsidies.
During the peaceful sit-in at Maitighar Mandala, the farmers urged the government to immediately release Rs 1.6 billion owed for sugarcane sold in the 2081/82 fiscal year.
They further demanded that subsidies for sugarcane be maintained in the coming fiscal years and that price determination be carried out only after mutual consultation.
Participants held placards bearing various slogans as they voiced their demands, maintaining a peaceful stance throughout the demonstration.
