KATHMANDU: Former world champions Spain were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by World Cup debutants Cape Verde in their opening Group H match of the FIFA World Cup on Monday.

The match, played at Atlanta Stadium in the United States, ended without a goal as both sides failed to break the deadlock despite creating several opportunities.

However, Cape Verde produced a disciplined defensive display to earn a historic point in their first-ever World Cup appearance.

With the result, both Spain and Cape Verde collected one point each in Group H.

The other Group H fixture between Saudi Arabia and Uruguay is scheduled to be played later on Monday, with kickoff set for 3:45 a.m. Nepal time.
