Sher Bahadur Deuba: Inclusive electoral system makes majority difficult for any party
“I have been the party president and served multiple terms as Prime Minister because of this party. My only aim is to make Congress strong nationwide,” Deuba said.
KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba has said that the inclusive and proportional electoral provisions enshrined in Nepal’s Constitution make it difficult for any single party to secure a clear majority.
Speaking at a condolence gathering organized by Nepali Congress Chitwan on the seventh day of the passing of veteran democracy fighter Gauridevi Pradhan, Deuba remarked that the current electoral structure prevents any party from attaining outright majority.
He emphasized that his sole focus remains on strengthening the Nepali Congress across the country.
“I have been the party president and served multiple terms as Prime Minister because of this party. My only aim is to make Congress strong nationwide,” Deuba said.
Stating that only one candidate can receive a party ticket per constituency, he called on aspirants to support those who do get nominated, noting that unity is key to a stronger party. He also stressed the need to eliminate internal conflicts, urging members to work together sincerely to build a majority-capable party and safeguard the constitution.
Recalling the democratic legacy of Gauridevi Pradhan and her husband Shyam Krishna Pradhan, Deuba said it was vital to follow in their footsteps and complete their unfinished work. He praised the Pradhan family as principled, social-minded, and committed to democracy.
Addressing the same program, NC Treasurer Umesh Shrestha described Congress as the party that can lead Nepal to prosperity. He stressed the importance of learning from history and moving forward in line with public aspirations.
Leader Bimalendra Nidhi said alliances can be formed based on necessity and circumstance, especially when no party can secure a majority alone. In such cases, coalitions can help Congress emerge as the largest force, he said.
Leader Dr. Shashank Koirala noted that a stronger Congress would ensure constitutional protection. He also paid tribute to Gauridevi Pradhan’s vital contributions to Nepal’s democratic movements and emphasized the importance of honoring the legacy of democratic fighters in the days ahead.
Central Committee members Uma Regmi and Tek Prasad Gurung also highlighted Gauridevi Pradhan’s significant role in Nepal’s political struggles.
