Shahi demands PM’s controversial remarks be removed from record
Shahi challenged the Prime Minister to present evidence supporting his claim that Nepal has occupied Indian land.
KATHMANDU: Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) parliamentary leader Gyanendra Shahi has demanded that Prime Minister Balen Shah’s controversial statement regarding Nepal allegedly encroaching on Indian territory be removed from the parliamentary record.
Addressing a meeting of the House of Representatives on Monday, Shahi challenged the Prime Minister to present evidence supporting his claim that Nepal has occupied Indian land.
“Remarks made in a tea shop and statements delivered in Parliament are not the same,” Shahi said. “There is a significant difference between what an ordinary citizen says and what the Prime Minister of a country says. When the Prime Minister makes a claim, it is viewed as the government’s official position. The international community interprets it as Nepal’s official stance, and the public accepts it as truth.”
He stressed that statements made by the head of government must be grounded in facts, evidence, and reality, warning that unsubstantiated claims could have serious diplomatic and political consequences.
Shahi further argued that while unsupported assertions may serve as political rhetoric, they cannot form the basis of state policy or governance. He urged the Prime Minister to provide credible evidence for his claim or have the disputed remarks expunged from the official parliamentary record.
