‘Seto Dharti’ brings Tara’s pain alive on stage (photos)

KATHMANDU: The novel Seto Dharti, written by Madan Puraskar-winning author Amar Neupane, has been brought to the stage, marking the theatrical debut of film actress Benisha Hamal in the lead role.

The play is being produced by actress Rekha Thapa and directed by theatre artist Sundar Dhital under the banner of Kantipur Film Academy.

Performances began on April 10 at the Kantipur Theatre in Gairidhara.

Originally published in 2068 BS and honored with the Madan Puraskar, Seto Dharti is regarded as one of the most widely read and influential Nepali novels. The story is centered on the character Tara, narrated through her perspective.

The adaptation explores deep psychological and social themes, including the conflict between human desire and rigid cultural traditions. It portrays the emotional and biological struggles of a young widow whose natural feelings and aspirations are suppressed by religious and societal norms.

The narrative also reflects on childhood, sexuality, and old age psychology, blending themes of suffering, spirituality, and human existence.

The stage production features a large ensemble cast including Suhana Acharya, Umesh Sunam, Sajana Thapa, Sushmita Shrestha, Adrian Dhamala, Bina Rokaya, Binita Giri, Arnab Ghimire, Samrat Bhujel, Biran Dahani, Awash Bhattarai, Nitesh Lohar, Bikalpa Oli, Arjun Rai, Alina Karki, Bishal Karki, Prayas Khati, Sanskar Chaulagain, Tejaswi Sharma, Swikriti Pant, Rabin Pun Magar, and Barsha Bhandari among others.

The play will run until May 2, with regular shows at 5:15 PM every day except Wednesdays. Additional matinee performances will be held on Saturdays, Sundays, and on April 14 at 1:15 PM.
