Sangam files sexual assault case against Sagar Lamsal in US
The NYPD has reportedly begun an investigation, which may involve coordination with Nepalese authorities.
KATHMANDU: Artist Sagar Lamsal, popularly known as ‘Bale’, is facing a legal case in the United States after a Nepali student studying in New York accused him of sexual assault.
The alleged victim, Sangam Bista, filed a formal complaint with the New York City Police Department (NYPD) two days ago, family sources said. The NYPD has reportedly begun an investigation, which may involve coordination with Nepalese authorities.
According to Bista, she met Lamsal a year ago when he visited the U.S., and he later took her to his apartment under the pretext of showing her around. She claims that he assaulted her there.
Following her social media post detailing the incident, Nepalese police arrested Lamsal. However, no formal complaint has yet been filed against him in Nepal. Due to the absence of a legal report, the local authorities extended his custody by five days under charges of misconduct, which can legally last up to 25 days.
Bista’s family is currently consulting lawyers regarding the next steps in the legal process, while it remains unclear whether a formal complaint will be lodged in Nepal.
