KATHMANDU: The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) is preparing to announce its candidate for the upcoming by-election in Rupandehi-3 later today.

Ahead of the formal decision, aspiring candidates have been visiting party president Rabi Lamichhane at Nakkhu Prison to seek his final opinion.

Lamichhane, who was recently transferred there from Bhairahawa Prison, is currently in judicial custody in connection with the cooperative fraud case.

Following the consultations, the party’s secretariat is scheduled to meet at 1:30 PM today.

From the nine names on the shortlist, one will be officially endorsed as the party’s candidate, with the formal announcement expected immediately after the meeting, according to RSP sources.

Those shortlisted include central committee member Kusum Maharjan, Rupandehi-3 regional president Madhu Aryal, US-returnee Sulabh Kharel from Butwal Semlar, Parthivendra Upadhyaya, Dr. Lekh Jung Thapa, Gyanu Paudel, Jeet Bahadur Gupta of Kothimai, Rachana Chhetri, and Poonam Kumari Agrawal.

Of these, five are from the Bhairahawa area, while Maharjan, Aryal, Kharel, and Gupta hail from outside the constituency.

The Rupandehi-3 seat became vacant following the death of Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) lawmaker Deepak Bohara.

The by-election is scheduled for Katik 17, and RSP has attached special importance to the contest, aiming to field a strong candidate to secure victory.
