RPP’s Rajendra Gurung warns against ‘elections for the sake of elections’
He said this proposal has been formally presented to government ministers during the discussions.
KATHMANDU: Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) leader Rajendra Gurung has said the government should not pursue elections merely to hold polls, stressing that elections must help resolve the country’s deep-rooted political problems.
Speaking to journalists after talks with the government-formed Political Dialogue Committee, Gurung said the government’s preparation for the parliamentary election scheduled for March 5 remains inadequate.
He appreciated the government’s initiative of engaging directly with political parties by visiting their offices, calling it a positive political culture that helps ease tensions and create a more harmonious election environment.
“Such political conduct makes the situation easier and contributes to a healthy electoral atmosphere,” Gurung said, adding that elections should be a means to address disorder and governance challenges in the country.
Gurung also criticized the current electoral process, saying it is fundamentally flawed and needs correction. He stressed that elections should not be conducted solely for procedural reasons.
“The election must solve the country’s problems. Elections for the sake of elections are meaningless,” he said.
According to Gurung, the RPP has proposed that the government move forward through dialogue and consensus involving pro-monarchy political forces as well as the younger Gen Z population.
He said this proposal has been formally presented to government ministers during the discussions.
The government’s dialogue committee, Gurung noted, said it had visited political parties to brief them on election preparations and the overall national situation.
