KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Balen Shah has pledged that his government is committed to eradicating corruption in Nepal within one year, announcing that the current year has been designated as the “Year of Good Governance.”

Responding to lawmakers’ questions in Sunday’s House of Representatives session, PM Shah said both the government and the ruling Rastriya Swatantra Party are determined to transform the country by strengthening accountability and removing entrenched malpractice.

He said various ministries are actively monitoring their subordinate bodies to improve transparency and service delivery, emphasizing that governance reforms will continue alongside development and infrastructure work.

“We have taken this year as the year of good governance… We are fully committed to steering the country toward good governance, eliminating irregularities, and uprooting deeply rooted corruption,” Shah stated in Parliament.

The Prime Minister acknowledged that corruption has long been deeply entrenched in state institutions, adding that the government is working systematically to change that culture, including in offices such as land revenue and other public service agencies.

Shah reiterated that the government’s reform agenda will focus on strengthening oversight mechanisms while ensuring that development activities are not slowed down.
