Opposition set to disrupt Parliament over PM’s border remark
During the heated session, several opposition MPs demanded that the statement be removed from the official parliamentary record.
KATHMANDU: Opposition parties in are set to strongly protest in today’s parliamentary session over Prime Minister Balen Shah’s controversial remarks regarding the Nepal-India border issue, following a tense political standoff in the House.
The dispute erupted after the Prime Minister, speaking unexpectedly during a recent parliamentary session, allegedly stated that “Nepal has also encroached on Indian territory,” a comment that triggered immediate backlash from lawmakers across the opposition.
During the heated session, several opposition MPs demanded that the statement be removed from the official parliamentary record.
However, Speaker D.P. Aryal reportedly did not act on the request, further escalating tensions in the chamber.
The situation intensified after the Speaker attempted to push forward parliamentary rules, leading to a disrupted and confrontational session that lasted throughout the day.
Opposition leaders say they are now preparing a coordinated response in today’s sitting, scheduled for 1 PM local time.
Senior leaders from major opposition parties are also expected to hold informal consultations ahead of the session.
According to Chief Opposition Whip Ain Mahar, lawmakers are preparing to physically obstruct proceedings if their demands are not addressed.
“From the very start of today’s session, we will encircle the Speaker’s podium. Unless the Prime Minister’s remarks are expunged from the record and he issues an apology to Parliament, we will not allow the House to function,” Mahar said.
