Opposition protest as House passes election bills without debate

KATHMANDU: The House of Representatives on Thursday passed a proposal to consider the Federal Election First Amendment Bill 2083 by majority vote, amid loud protests from opposition lawmakers.

As opposition MPs surrounded the well of the House chanting slogans, the Speaker announced that the proposal had been approved on the basis of a majority decision.

No lawmakers participated in the debate on the bill. The legislation was tabled by Law Minister Sobita Gautam on behalf of Prime Minister Balen Shah.

However, opposition parties maintained their stance that the Prime Minister should have been present in the House during the process.

In a similar development, the House also approved by majority the proposal to consider the Voter List (First Amendment) Bill 2083.

No MPs registered to speak during the discussion on this bill as well.
