KATHMANDU: The National Assembly was obstructed on Monday after opposition parties strongly objected to controversial remarks made by Prime Minister Balen Shah during a recent parliamentary session.

During the meeting, opposition lawmakers stood in protest as Chair Narayan Prasad Dahal attempted to proceed with the day’s business.

The protesting members demanded that the Prime Minister’s statement be withdrawn from the parliamentary record, warning that they would continue to block proceedings until their demand was met.

The controversy stems from Sunday’s session of the House of Representatives, where Prime Minister Shah responded to lawmakers’ questions by stating that not only India has encroached on Nepal’s territory, but Nepal has also encroached on Indian land, adding that such matters should be resolved through dialogue.

Following the remarks, opposition parties and several public commentators sharply criticized the statement, calling it inappropriate and “nationally sensitive.”

As tensions escalated in the upper house, the National Assembly session was fully obstructed, with opposition parties maintaining their protest stance and refusing to allow proceedings to continue.
