Nepal police to form separate cell to curb AI misuse: IGP Karki
Karki urged strong collaboration between law enforcement and journalists to ensure responsible reporting while controlling misinformation.
KATHMANDU: Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dan Bahadur Karki has announced that the Nepal Police is set to establish an AI and Advanced Analytics Cell aimed at monitoring and addressing the spread of false information.
Speaking at a one-day interaction program on the role of media in crime investigation and public safety on Monday, IGP Karki emphasized that the misuse of information technology to circulate misleading content has been increasing, making it necessary for the police to take proactive measures.
He highlighted growing concerns over the rapid competition among media outlets to deliver news first, which has inadvertently fueled the spread of false and misleading reports.
Karki urged strong collaboration between law enforcement and journalists to ensure responsible reporting while controlling misinformation.
Stressing the importance of national security, the IGP called on media professionals to internalize their responsibility as a part of their professional ethics.
He also encouraged news organizations to exercise caution and refrain from publishing content that could negatively impact criminal investigations.
