KATHMANDU: A resolution regarding the end of menstrual discrimination for a dignified menstruation has been presented in the National Assembly.

In Friday’s session of the Assembly, Madan Kumari Sah, a Member of Parliament from the CPN (Unified Socialist), introduced a resolution titled “Ending Menstrual Discrimination for Dignified Menstruation.”

The proposal has garnered support from MPs Sumitra BC, Ganga Belbase, Bishnu Kumari Sapkota, Pooja Chaudhary, and Dr. Anjan Shakya.

While presenting the resolution, MP Sah highlighted that 95% of families in the country still subject women to discrimination during menstruation.

She emphasized that menstruation is a natural process and that it is crucial to eliminate such discrimination.

She stated, “Depending on location, caste, religion, and community, this issue is addressed in various ways. In the name of religion, tradition, and customs, untouchability practices are followed. The extent of this discrimination may vary, but it exists. In the Mid and Far Western regions, it appears as ‘chhau goth’ (a practice where women are isolated), whereas, in other parts of Nepal, it manifests as discrimination within households. This condition affects 95% of the families in Nepal.”

Supporters of the proposal also noted that menstrual discrimination severely impacts young girls and constitutes a violation of human rights.

They emphasized the urgent need to eradicate such discrimination from the roots.
