KATHMANDU: Myanmar clinched the title of the International Women’s Football Championship by defeating Nepal 2-0 in the final match held at Dasharath Stadium, Tripureshwar, on Wednesday.
Yu Per Khiang and captain Win Theingi Tun were the goal scorers for Myanmar.
Khiang broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute with a left-sided strike, giving Myanmar the lead. Shortly after, Tun doubled the advantage, sealing the victory.
Despite a strong start, Nepal failed to capitalize on key chances in the first half. In the 24th minute, Nepal’s goalkeeper Bimala BK made a crucial save against a strike from Myanmar’s San Thaw Thaw.
Later, in the 35th minute, Nepal’s star forward Sabitra Bhandari ‘Samba’ saw her shot blocked by the Myanmar goalkeeper, and even the rebound attempt failed to find the net.
Just before halftime, in the 44th minute, a cross from Renuka Nagarkoti slipped through the Myanmar goalkeeper’s hands, but both Samba and Rekha missed the opportunity to convert it into a goal.
Nepal had reached the final by defeating Kyrgyzstan and Lebanon. In the league stage, Nepal had beaten both teams 1-0 and played a 2-2 draw against Myanmar.
Meanwhile, Myanmar had secured a 3-1 victory over Lebanon and a dominant 5-0 win against Kyrgyzstan.
With this defeat, Nepal’s dream of securing the championship title remains unfulfilled.
