KATHMANDU: A new Nepali film, ‘Laalimaa’, inspired by the experiences of 3,000 sex workers, is set to hit theaters a week after the conclusion of the House of Representatives election.

The producers unveiled the film’s first-look poster on Tuesday, confirming its release date as March 13—the same day another film, ‘Stree’, is scheduled to premiere.

The poster features lead actress Roshni Karki, seated by a window, her body modestly covered in white cloth.

Her face reflects fear, while the red stain on her attire hints at the struggles her character endures. Karki plays the role of a sex worker in the film.

Directed and written by Roshan Miraj, the film also stars Usha Rajak, Shishir Bangdel, Jeevan Bhattarai, Sabin Kattel, Ghanshyam Joshi, and Sushma Niraula.

The movie is produced in collaboration with Faith Aastha and Amplify Change, with Reena Lama serving as executive producer.

Speaking about the film, Miraj said, “The story revolves around Lalima’s difficult journey. A tragic event lands her mother, who cannot speak, in prison. In her struggle to free her mother, Lalima is pushed into the harsh and dark corners of the city. The film portrays how she survives physical, emotional, and mental suffering.”

‘Laalimaa’ aims to shed light on the hidden challenges faced by sex workers, offering audiences a raw and powerful cinematic experience.
