Minister Gurung: Libraries must become hubs of research, innovation, and skills
Minister Gurung said libraries are not just places for study but also centers for raising civic awareness, fostering social dialogue, and inspiring change.
KATHMANDU: Communication and Information Technology Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung has emphasized the need to develop libraries as key centers for research, innovation, and skill enhancement.
Speaking at the event marking the 18th Library Day in Kathmandu on Sunday, Minister Gurung said libraries are not just places for study but also centers for raising civic awareness, fostering social dialogue, and inspiring change.
He highlighted that rural libraries are bridging the information gap through technologies such as computers, internet access, digital systems, and mobile libraries.
According to the minister, modern libraries are increasingly becoming hubs for research, innovation, and skill development, particularly for the youth.
“Libraries have become spaces that provide information, skills, and empowerment to women, children, farmers, laborers, students, and all segments of society,” he said. “However, due to gaps in legal frameworks, inadequate investment, and limited technology, libraries have yet to reach their full potential.”
Minister Gurung stressed that strengthening libraries requires a collaborative effort from the government, local authorities, and communities. “It is essential to provide libraries with strong legal backing, adequate budgets, and modern technology,” he added.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving libraries and promoting a culture of reading across the country.
