Machhindra lifts Itahari Gold Cup title

KATHMANDU: Kathmandu’s Machhindra Football Club clinched the title of the 15th Itahari Gold Cup football tournament.

In the final held on Saturday at Itahari Stadium, Machhindra defeated Sagarmatha Youth Club, Morang, by 2-0 to secure the championship.

With the victory, Machhindra bagged a cash prize of Rs 1 million, along with a trophy, medals, and certificates. Runners-up Sagarmatha settled for NRs 500,000.

Foreign player Malik Yusuf opened the scoring for Machhindra in the 4th minute, while Omulaja Nurain Harim sealed the victory with a goal in the 85th minute.

Despite the loss, Sagarmatha captain Ashok Khawas was named Man of the Match, receiving Rs 10,000 and a trophy.

His teammate Kuldeep Karki was awarded the Best Player title, earning Rs 100,000 and a trophy.

Machhindra dominated individual awards, with Bishal Shrestha named Best Goalkeeper, Shanis Shrestha Best Defender, and Bishal Ghalan Best Midfielder.

Malik Yusuf was recognized as the Best Forward, while coach Santosh Neupane was honored as the Best Coach. Each received Rs 20,000 and a trophy.

Yusuf, who scored four goals throughout the tournament, was also crowned the top scorer, winning Rs 25,000.

Rising Star of the tournament Sabin Ghimire of National Jagriti Club received a 32-inch LED TV.

Koshi Province’s Minister for Forest, Environment, and Tourism, Sadananda Mandal, and Koshi Province Football Association President Kishor Rai handed over the prizes.

The tournament, which began on Feb 15, featured eight teams, including one from India, according to coordinator Anurodh Thapa.
