KATHMANDU: Nepali cinema occasionally produces unusual records, some of which stand out even on a global scale.

One of the most striking examples remains the 2022 release Shiwani, which is widely noted for its extremely low box office performance.

The film reportedly earned just Rs 520 in total, with only five tickets sold, making it one of the lowest-grossing films in cinematic history.

Now, another Nepali film is drawing attention for a different but equally unusual record.

The upcoming release Kumbha, scheduled to hit theatres this Friday, has reportedly received the fewest screenings for a Nepali film to date.

According to listings available on digital platforms as of Thursday afternoon, the film has secured only seven shows nationwide for its opening day.

Shockingly, around 98% of cinemas across the country have not allocated any screening at all.

Even the country’s largest multiplex chain, QFX, has not scheduled the film.

For Saturday, the situation appears even more limited, with fewer screenings available than on opening day.

Despite featuring more than half a dozen actors on its promotional poster and bringing in India-based actor Surendra Thakur for promotion, the film has struggled to generate audience interest.

Ticket sales reflect this trend, with only two tickets reportedly sold so far at the time of reporting.

Given the current distribution and advance booking pattern, industry observers are questioning whether Kumbha might end up replicating the commercial fate of Shiwani, which became known for its exceptionally poor box office record.
