KATHMANDU: Kulman Ghising, Chair of the Ujyalo Nepal Party (UNP), has strongly objected to recent remarks made by Prime Minister Balen Shah in Parliament regarding Nepal–India border issues, calling the statement “suspicious” and politically sensitive.

Ghising reacted on social media, responding to the Prime Minister’s claim that “Nepal has also encroached on Indian territory.”

He argued that Nepal’s long-standing position on boundary matters has been based on historical documents, maps, treaties, and verified evidence.

“Nepal has consistently maintained its stance based on historical documents, maps, treaties, and facts. Such a statement from the head of government in the nation’s highest parliamentary forum weakens Nepal’s national position,” Ghising wrote.

He warned that such remarks could create confusion at the international level and potentially affect Nepal’s legitimate territorial claims.

The UNP chief also raised concerns about the timing of the statement, coming just ahead of the India visit of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) President.

“In the eve of the India visit by the RSP President, such a statement from a senior leader of the same party raises suspicion and questions,” he noted.

Ghising urged the Prime Minister to clearly explain the basis, context, and evidence behind the remarks to the public.

He stressed that border issues must be addressed through historical facts and expert analysis rather than emotion or assumptions.

“National interest requires clarity, firmness, and responsibility,” he said, adding that border matters are not the concern of any single party or individual but a shared national issue.
