Kathmandu second most polluted city globally amid persistent smog (photos)

KATHMANDU: Kathmandu Valley remains shrouded in thick smog as much of Nepal experiences overcast weather in recent days.
Meteorologists attribute the hazy conditions to local air stagnation and the lingering effects of widespread forest fires across the country.

Experts say that only strong winds or heavy rainfall can clear the dense smog.

The stagnant weather has caused air pollution levels to spike.

According to real-time data from Switzerland-based IQAir, the Air Quality Index (AQI) in Kathmandu reached 213 at 10 a.m. today.

An AQI above 150 is considered unhealthy, while levels above 200 are categorized as very unhealthy.

This places Kathmandu second on the list of the world’s most polluted cities, following Delhi, India.

In response, the Ministry of Health and Population has urged the public to remain cautious.

Spokesperson Dr. Prakash Budhathoki warned that prolonged exposure to high pollution levels can increase the risk of heart, lung, kidney, and eye problems, respiratory illnesses such as asthma, and even cancer.

Authorities are advising residents to take necessary precautions until conditions improve.
