Kathmandu air pollution hits ‘very unhealthy’ level, ranks 2nd globally

KATHMANDU: Kathmandu’s air pollution has reached a “very unhealthy” level on Tuesday morning, raising serious health concerns for residents.

According to real-time data from Swiss air quality monitoring platform IQAir, the Air Quality Index (AQI) in Kathmandu reached 213 at 10 a.m., placing it in the “very unhealthy” category.

An AQI reading above 150 is considered unhealthy, while levels above 200 are classified as very unhealthy, posing potential health risks for the general population.

Under Nepal government–approved air quality standards, AQI levels are categorized as:

  • 0–50: Good

  • 51–100: Moderate

  • 101–150: Unhealthy for sensitive groups

  • 151–200: Unhealthy

  • 201–300: Very unhealthy

  • Above 301: Hazardous

With the latest reading, Kathmandu ranked the world’s second most polluted city, according to IQAir’s global air quality ranking.
