KATHMANDU: Kanchha Sherpa, the last surviving member of the historic 1953 Mount Everest expedition, has passed away at the age of 92.

He was part of the legendary team in which Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa made the first successful ascent of Everest.

Serving as a porter in the expedition, Kancha Sherpa had climbed above 8,000 meters during the climb.

Sherpa dedicated over two decades of his life to the mountaineering field.

According to family sources, he passed away today at his residence in Kapan, Kathmandu.
