KATHMANDU: Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak has emphasized that any organization operating in Nepal must adhere to the country’s prevailing laws.

Speaking at a meeting of the National Assembly’s Development, Economic Affairs, and Good Governance Committee on Sunday, Minister Lekhak addressed concerns regarding social media restrictions, clarifying that the government’s request for social media platforms to register in Nepal is not aimed at banning or restricting their operations.

“The government’s intention is not to prevent platforms from operating or to block their services. Registration is simply to ensure that the government knows which organizations are working within the country,” he said.

Minister Lekhak stressed that organizations must respect Nepal’s laws and constitution. “No organization has the right to say they will not comply with our country’s laws. If any entity comes and refuses to follow Nepal’s legal framework, what are we supposed to do?” he questioned.

He acknowledged that recent social media disruptions have caused some challenges but urged a balanced understanding of the situation. “Platforms are encouraged to register in Nepal, and the problems caused by current restrictions must be taken seriously by everyone,” he added.
