Grand alliance collapses: NCP to contest National Assembly alone
In Madhesh Province, the two parties have agreed to allocate one seat to the Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP), the third-largest party in the region.
KATHMANDU: With efforts to form an electoral alliance among major parties failing, the Nepal Communist Party (NCP) has withdrawn from the coalition ahead of the National Assembly election scheduled for Jan 25.
For the 18 vacant National Assembly seats, Nepali Congress and CPN-UML have already finalized their candidates through a seat-sharing arrangement, with Congress claiming 9 seats and UML 8.
In Madhesh Province, the two parties have agreed to allocate one seat to the Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP), the third-largest party in the region.
In other provinces, Congress and UML remain the main competitors.
Following the seat-sharing deal, NCP has decided to contest independently and is preparing to field candidates in all constituencies.
Candidate nominations open today, with voting set for Jan 25.
National Assembly members will be elected by provincial assembly members and local government heads, totaling 1,506 voters across seven provinces—550 provincial assembly members and 753 local chiefs and deputies.
They will vote for 18 of the 19 seats, with the remaining seat to be nominated by the government in place of Wamdev Gautam.
