KATHMANDU: Police detained a group of ‘Gen Z’ activists on Monday while they staged a protest at Maitighar Mandala, demanding good governance and the formation of an all-party government.
Led by Miraj Dhungana, coordinator of the ‘Garikhan Deu’ campaign, the youths began their demonstration despite restrictions in the area, prompting authorities to intervene.
The protestors, including Rabikiran Hamal and Nicholas Bhusal, carried placards reading, “Gen Z’s demand is not elections, but good governance.”
The group criticized the current administration under Prime Minister Sushila Karki for failing to meet public expectations during its 100-day tenure and called for the establishment of an all-party government before any elections.
They also urged a review of the country’s governance structure and proposed constitutional amendments or a grand convention to rewrite the constitution.
The District Administration Office had issued prior notice of the protest and tightened security around Maitighar from 11 a.m.
Police initially requested the crowd to disperse, but arrests were made after demonstrators continued chanting slogans.
