KATHMANDU: Youth protesters, led by the Gen Z movement, have entered a restricted area in New Baneshwor, escalating tensions in the heart of the capital.

The demonstrators, who had initially gathered at Maitighar Mandala for a peaceful protest against corruption and maladministration, clashed with police while attempting to move forward.

As the protesters marched from Maitighar toward New Baneshwor, law enforcement tried to stop their advance, leading to scuffles between the two sides.

The youth, frustrated by widespread corruption and governance issues, intensified their demonstration, warning the government that they would continue their activism on the streets until meaningful reform is achieved.

The protest has garnered widespread support on social media.

The participants emphasized that their movement is apolitical, raising their voices solely for the country and its citizens, without representing any political party.

The march progressed toward the Federal Parliament building, with protesters breaking through police barricades in New Baneshwor, creating a tense situation.

Authorities reportedly used batons on some demonstrators near the parliamentary area, yet the crowd remained defiant, further complicating the situation.

During the protest, some youths reportedly threw water bottles at police, while chanting slogans in support of Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah and against the Prime Minister.

Despite the confrontations, the protesters’ march continues, with a strong security presence in the area. Authorities have yet to fully restore order.
