KATHMANDU: Ethiopia has successfully conducted its seventh general election, with millions of voters participating across thousands of polling stations nationwide, according to the National Electoral Board.

The National Electoral Board of Ethiopia reported that more than 54 million citizens cast their ballots in the election, marking one of the country’s largest democratic exercises to date.

Voters elected members of the federal lower house, the House of Peoples’ Representatives, as well as representatives for regional councils. More than 10,000 candidates from 42 political parties, along with several independent contenders, competed in the polls.

Under Ethiopia’s constitutional framework, the political party or coalition securing a majority in parliament is responsible for forming the government and appointing the Prime Minister.

Officials said the official results are expected within about 10 days. To ensure smooth and orderly voting, the government declared a public holiday across most workplaces, except for essential services.
