Embassy alerts Nepalis: Social media misuse can lead to jail
The notice highlighted that videos and photos circulating online without official confirmation could increase security risks and cause confusion.
KATHMANDU: The Nepali Embassy in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has issued a public advisory urging the Nepali community to exercise heightened caution amid recent developments in the country.
In its second advisory, the embassy specifically warned against sharing unverified, misleading, or negative content on social media.
The notice highlighted that videos and photos circulating online without official confirmation could increase security risks and cause confusion.
“Disseminating unverified material may create panic and misperceptions about local security conditions,” the advisory stated. “Posting photos or videos of situations requires full responsibility.”
The embassy also reminded Nepalis in the UAE that spreading rumors or engaging in activities that could destabilize social order is punishable under local law.
It recommended relying solely on official sources, including UAE government websites and verified announcements, for accurate information.
Earlier, the embassy had advised Nepalis to avoid unnecessary travel and remain vigilant about personal safety.
Emphasizing that misuse of social media could affect not only individuals but the broader community’s reputation and security, the embassy reiterated its call for restraint and responsible behavior.
