KATHMANDU: Belgium and Iran played out a 0–0 draw in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Group G clash on Sunday night in Los Angeles, in a match defined by missed opportunities and outstanding goalkeeping.

Despite dominating large phases of the game, Belgium could not find a breakthrough, registering 23 attempts on goal.

Iran’s goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand produced a brilliant performance, denying every Belgian effort and securing a valuable point for his side.

The match turned more difficult for Belgium in the 66th minute when defender Nathan Ngoy was shown a red card, reducing his team to 10 men. Even then, Belgium continued to push forward but failed to convert their chances.

Iran briefly thought they had taken the lead in the 25th minute through Mehdi Taremi, but the goal was disallowed after a VAR review ruled it offside.

Belgium’s star players Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku were heavily relied upon, but neither managed to make a decisive impact, with Lukaku in particular wasting key opportunities.

The result marks Belgium’s second consecutive draw in the tournament. Both Belgium and Iran now sit level on 2 points in Group G, leaving qualification to the knockout stage finely balanced.

Belgium, semifinalists in the 2018 World Cup, now face growing pressure as they risk an early exit. A win against New Zealand in their final group match will be crucial to secure progression, while any other result could leave their fate uncertain.

For Iran, the draw is historic, as it marks the first time they have avoided defeat in their opening two World Cup matches.

Beiranvand was named Man of the Match for his decisive saves that ensured Iran walked away with a hard-earned point.
