Balen hits back at Deuba’s FB post: Which VPN, Nepali or foreign?
In the latest twist, Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah's comment on a Facebook post by Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba has sparked significant controversy.
KATHMANDU: A growing public debate has unfolded following the Nepal government’s decision to impose a ban on Facebook, with tensions intensifying around the issue.
In the latest twist, Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah’s comment on a Facebook post by Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba has sparked significant controversy.
Balen Shah made a sharp and sarcastic remark on Deuba’s post, asking, “Which VPN is this post from, Nepali or foreign? It must be quite difficult to operate through a VPN!!!” This comment drew attention due to its sarcastic tone and apparent critique of government policies regarding social media use.
The post in question was about Deuba addressing an event celebrating the foundation day of the Nepal Sugarcane Association and the Karama Puja in the Bhojraha Narsingh Municipality of Sunsari.
Deuba’s post highlighted the large participation and grandeur of the event, but Balen’s comment has been interpreted by many as a mockery of the government’s own policies, which are currently being questioned by citizens and political figures alike.
Social media users have largely supported Balen Shah’s remark, describing it as “accurate,” “bold,” and “realistic.” However, despite the growing criticism, top officials from the ruling party, including government figures, remain active on Facebook, raising questions about the consistency and enforcement of the ban.
