‘Bahadurpurko Dantyakatha’ begins run at Mandala Theatre (photos)

KATHMANDU: A theatrical adaptation of renowned Indian playwright Badal Sarkar’s classic Bengali play Ballabhpurer Rupkatha, the Nepali play Bahadurpurko Dantyakatha has begun its regular staging at Mandala Theatre from Dec 20.
Set against the backdrop of a 421-year-old palace that has fallen into ruins, the play vividly portrays the astonishing struggles of its characters while exploring the clash between tradition and modernity, authority and rebellion.
Through a blend of humor, satire, and mystery, the production engages the audience both intellectually and emotionally.
The story revolves around the comic yet poignant struggle of a debt-ridden descendant of a royal family attempting to sell his crumbling ancestral palace.
The narrative unfolds with sharp wit and layered symbolism, presenting absurd situations that gradually compel the audience to reflect on deeper social and political realities.
Based on this storyline, several plays and films have previously been produced in India.
Overall, Bahadurpurko Dantyakatha stands out as a vibrant and thought-provoking performance that makes audiences laugh while urging them to think.
The play has been conceptualized and directed by theatre artist Saraswati Chaudhary and features performances by veteran actors Kamalmani Nepal, Praveen Khativada, Sarita Giri, Saraswati Chaudhary, Ghanshyam Joshi, Ram Bhajan Kamat, Dipal Baral, Chandra Nepali, and Aditya Narayan Mishra.
The Nepali adaptation has been skillfully translated by Vijay Bisphot.
Produced by Suraj Yadav under the banner of Mandala Theatre, Bahadurpurko Dantyakatha will continue its run until Jan 11.
The play is staged every day except Monday at 5:00 pm, with an additional matinee show on Saturdays at 1:00 pm.
