Arsenal go nine clear at the top as United continue winning run
The league leaders were made to wait for the breakthrough after Sunderland forward Brian Brobbey missed a golden early chance in front of an open goal.
KATHMANDU: Arsenal tightened their grip at the top of the Premier League table, extending their lead to nine points with a comfortable 3–0 victory over Sunderland on Saturday.
The league leaders were made to wait for the breakthrough after Sunderland forward Brian Brobbey missed a golden early chance in front of an open goal.
Arsenal capitalised before the break, with midfielder Martin Zubimendi opening the scoring in the 42nd minute.
Substitute Viktor Gyökeres then proved decisive after the interval.
The forward doubled Arsenal’s advantage in the 66th minute and added his second deep into injury time to seal a commanding win.
Despite late pressure, Sunderland were unable to seriously test Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya.
The defeat saw Sunderland slip to ninth place in the standings.
With 25 matches played, Arsenal now have 56 points. Second-placed Manchester City, who did not play on Saturday and face Liverpool on Sunday, and third-placed Aston Villa both sit on 47 points, with Villa held to a draw by AFC Bournemouth.
The nine-point cushion is Arsenal’s largest lead at the top of the Premier League since the 2003/04 season, when they went on to win the title with an 11-point advantage.
United’s Fourth Straight Win Under Carrick

Manchester United continued their impressive run under Michael Carrick, securing a fourth consecutive victory and maintaining his 100 percent record as head coach.
United defeated Tottenham Hotspur 2–0 on Saturday, with goals from Bryan Mbeumo and captain Bruno Fernandes.
Mbeumo struck in the 38th minute before Fernandes sealed the win with a late goal in the 81st.
The result means Carrick has collected the maximum 12 points in his second spell as interim manager.
United are now guaranteed to remain in the top four after 25 matches, regardless of results this week for fifth-placed Chelsea and sixth-placed Liverpool.
Carrick’s first three victories came against top opposition. United beat second-placed Manchester City at Old Trafford, then defeated league leaders Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium, before overcoming Fulham at home in their previous match.
With momentum building, United look increasingly settled under Carrick as the Premier League season enters a decisive phase.
