Army deployed as Gen Z protest turns chaotic
Police responded with dozens of tear gas shells and aerial firing to disperse the crowd.
KATHMANDU: Kathmandu’s New Baneshwor area descended into chaos on Sunday after a “Gen Z” protest escalated into vandalism and arson, prompting the deployment of the Nepal Army for security reinforcement.
The protest, which began peacefully at Maitighar Mandala earlier in the morning, turned violent after demonstrators broke into restricted zones and clashed with police in front of the Parliament building.
Police responded with dozens of tear gas shells and aerial firing to disperse the crowd.
According to Army spokesperson Brigadier General Rajaram Basnet, a troop was mobilized in the curfew-imposed zone at the request of the local security committee after protesters attempted to storm Parliament.
The clashes left over 30 police personnel, including a Deputy Superintendent and an Inspector, as well as dozens of protesters injured.
The Kathmandu District Administration Office has enforced curfew orders in several parts of the capital to contain the situation and maintain security.
