KATHMANDU: All 52 makeshift structures built on the land of Amar Singh Secondary School at Amar Singh Chowk in Pokhara have been removed following an agreement between local authorities and business operators.

According to Ward Chairperson Santosh Bastola, the structures were cleared in line with a multi-party agreement signed on May 12, under which business owners agreed to dismantle the sheds themselves by May 18, while the metropolitan city had planned to use bulldozers from May 19 if necessary.

The area had been occupied by temporary structures since 1981. Although the land belongs to Amar Singh Secondary School, the school had leased it out over the years, allowing traders to build sheds and operate various businesses there.

Bastola said the relocation and management process received support and cooperation from the Pokhara metropolitan mayor, the school administration, former school management committee members, business operators, and media representatives.

He further stated that discussions will be held with former principals, former management committee chairpersons, the education division of Pokhara Metropolitan City, and other stakeholders to determine the future use of the now-vacant land.
