Harka demands PM statement correction, NC MP raises concerns over constitutional bodies
KATHMANDU: Lawmakers clashed in the House of Representatives on Friday as Shram Sanskriti Party Chair and MP Harka Sampang urged the government to correct what he termed a “controversial statement” made by the Prime Minister Balen Shah, saying his party has been protesting for over a month without response from the Speaker or the government.
Speaking in Parliament, Harka Sampang said they have been demanding the correction of the Prime Minister’s statement for nearly a month and have staged demonstrations for 16 days. He also criticized the Speaker for not addressing their concerns, questioning whether the country was being governed with attention or silence.
“Are we living in a country of stones or people?” he asked, expressing frustration over what he described as institutional inaction.
Meanwhile, Nepali Congress MP Khagendra Bahadur Budha raised serious concerns over alleged pressure on the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA), claiming that officials were detained for hours at the Prime Minister’s Office and pressured to issue arrest directives.
He also alleged reports of misconduct involving officials and even a foreign diplomat, calling for strict adherence to constitutional procedures.
Budha emphasized that the CIAA is an independent constitutional body responsible for monitoring corruption, including within the government itself, and warned against turning it into a subordinate institution.
He further questioned whether an “undisclosed group” was attempting to influence state mechanisms from within Singha Durbar, urging accountability and respect for constitutional checks and balances.
