KATHMANDU: A 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck China’s northwestern Qinghai Province, leaving one person dead and eight others injured, authorities confirmed.

According to the rescue headquarters, the quake hit the Haixi Mongolian and Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture on Tuesday evening. All injured individuals received primary treatment at local hospitals and were later discharged, officials said.

Following the tremor, thousands of residents, including students and teachers, were evacuated to safety as a precaution. Authorities have set up five temporary resettlement centres, providing food, shelter, and essential supplies to displaced people.

Tourist sites in the affected region have been closed, while visitors have been relocated to nearby cities to ensure safety. Emergency response operations have been intensified, with over 1,000 rescue personnel and around 200 vehicles deployed to the disaster zone.

The China Earthquake Networks Center reported that the quake occurred at 5:06 p.m. local time at a depth of 10 kilometres, with the epicentre located at 37.80°N latitude and 95.56°E longitude.
